Naval Zones
Given the size and particular nature of Chile's maritime territory, as well as its importance for the country's economic development, the country requires a Navy that is highly professional with well structured forces and the resources necessary to maintain control over activities taking place in both ocean and inland waters. To effectively carry out its tasks, the Chilean Navy has divided the country's maritime territory into five Naval Zones that are headquartered in the cities of Iquique, Valparaiso, Talcahuano, Puerto Montt and Punta Arenas. These offices include operational and logistical command centres, whose duties are to defend national sovereignty, protect human life on the seas, maintain maritime communication, protect the environment and marine resources, and control maritime activities in their respective jurisdictions.
