The Navy´s Area of Responsibility
This is an area of the ocean in which Chile ensures its presence in order to express national maritime interests in relation to the international community, protecting the environment and maritime resources whilst also recognizing International Law. This area draws a triangle from the country’s northern continental landmass out to Easter Island, Salas y Gomez, and the South Pole.
This is the maritime area, that extends for 200 nautical miles, over which the State of Chile holds sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, of the waters superjacent to the seabed and of the seabed and its subsoil. It also includes jurisdiction regarding the establishment and use of artificial islands, installations and structures for scientific maritime research, and for the protection and preservation of the marine environment. Chile’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covers 4,542,990.194 km2 of the ocean’s surface, equivalent to six times the country’s continental landmass. If we also consider Chile’s Presential Sea, Chile’s maritime area of interest increases to 17,512,822.147 km2. This area further increases to 26,476,004.502 km2. when Zones in which Chile has maritime search and rescue commitments are added to the country’s area of responsibility.
