Vice Admiral Huerta was born in Punta Arenas, Chile, on 28th July 1950. After studying at the “Arturo Prat” School in Talcahuano and Sacre Coeur in Viña del Mar, he entered the “Arturo Prat” Naval Academy and was commissioned Ensign on 01 January 1970.

He is a Staff specialist, graduated from the Greenwich Royal Naval College in Great Britain, and in Navigation. He holds the professional degree of Weapons Engineer with a major in Navigation and he is also a graduate in Naval and Maritime Sciences, specialized in Navigation, with a Master’s degree in Naval and Maritime Sciences and a major in Strategy.

He holds the degree of Military Academy Professor in the field of Tactics.

Throughout his more than seventeen years serving on board, he has filled duties in PP “Lientur”, AO “Araucano”, AP “Aquiles”, TS “Esmeralda”, DDG “Almirante Riveros” and DDG “Almirante Williams” and as General Staff Operations Officer at the National Fleet.

In 1985 he took over as Navigation Inspector in the Training Center for minor ships of the Royal Navy in Rosyth, Scotland.

He was Commanding Officer of the High Seas Tow Vessel “Sargento Aldea” in 1987, AP “Aquiles” in 1992 and AP “CA Oscar Viel Toro” in August 1996 and the year 1997.

Among his shore duties, we can highlight his performance as Chief of the Navy Tactical Training Center, Chief of the Operations Department of the Navy General Staff, Chief of General Staff of the Third Naval Zone, with HQ in Punta Arenas and Deputy Director of the Navy Directorate General of Personnel.

On January 1, 2000, the Supreme Government promoted him to Rear Admiral and he took over as Director of the National Academy of Politic-Strategic Studies.

On December 21, 2001, he was appointed Commander in Chief of the Fleet.

As of December 9, 2003 he took office as Commander of Naval Operations.

On 11th December 2003, the Supreme Government promoted him to Vice Admiral.

On December 22, 2004, he took office as Chief of General Staff, National Defense.

On December 27, 2006, he took office as Chief of the General General staff of the Navy.

He is married to the former Gloria Doren Paredes and they have four children.
