His Childhood
Imagen

Agustín Arturo Prat Chacón was born in the village of Ninhue, Department of Itata, Province of Maule, next to Quirihue, in the homestead of San Agustín de Puñual, on 04 April 1848, as certified in his Baptism Certificate subscribed by the parish priest of Ninhue, in page 03 of the christenings registry of the local parish.

His parents were Pedro Agustín Prat, whose ancestors came from the villa of Santa Coloma de Farnés, jurisdiction of Gerona, Cataluña, Spain; and María Luz Rosario Chacón y Barrios, daughter to Pedro Chacón y Morales, owner of the homestead, and Mrs. Concepción Barrios.

When his father became ill, the family moved to Santiago, staying at a farm owned by Mr. Pedro Chacón, and later moved to Nueva de San Diego Street, today Arturo Prat Street.

On 1856, little Arturo went to a small school recently inaugurated that year and located at the very same street. The school had a bell that called the students to class, and was therefore known as the "School of the Bell". The Headmaster was the inspector, Mr. Bernardo Suárez, and the Deputy Headmaster was the normal school teacher, Mr. Eliseo Otaíza.
